How Do You Begin If You Want to Be a Singer?

·

Every great singer started somewhere. Whether you dream of performing Hindustani classical ragas on stage or simply want to sing your favourite songs in tune, the journey begins with a few fundamental steps.

Start with Breathing

Breath control is the foundation of singing. Practice diaphragmatic breathing daily — breathe deeply into your belly rather than your chest. This gives you the support needed for sustained notes and powerful delivery.

Learn the Basics of Pitch

Understanding Sa Re Ga Ma (the Indian solfege system) or Do Re Mi gives you a framework for melody. Use a tanpura app or harmonium to practice matching pitch. Consistency matters more than perfection at this stage.

Find a Good Teacher

A knowledgeable teacher can identify your strengths, correct bad habits early, and guide your progress systematically. Look for someone who understands your musical goals and can adapt their teaching style to your learning pace.

Practice Regularly

Even 20 minutes of focused daily practice is more valuable than hours of sporadic effort. Build a routine that includes breathing exercises, scale practice (alankar), and song practice. Your voice is a muscle — it improves with regular, mindful use.
